April 24-26 — Mexico City (MX)

Presenting at SECOLAS 2025 & A Visit with the Maestro of Mexican Storytelling

A few standout moments from my sabbatical year came from my April visit to Mexico City, where I participated in the 2025 Southeastern Council of Latin American Studies (SECOLAS) Conference. My presentation drew from Serial Mexico to explore how serialized media, from novels and radionovelas to streaming telenovelas, has shaped Mexican national identity and global popular culture. SECOLAS provided an exceptional opportunity to connect with colleagues across disciplines and national borders, all united in the mission of advancing research, dialogue, and understanding around Latin America.

While there, I also had the tremendous honor of visiting Miguel Sabido, the legendary writer, producer, and creator of socially conscious telenovelas in Mexico.

Often called “the maestro of Mexican storytelling,” Sabido pioneered the entertainment-education model that influenced media policy and global narrative strategy. Sharing Serial Mexico with him and discussing his legacy was not only a career highlight but a moving reminder of the power of storytelling to inform, transform, and inspire.
