Author of the Month at the Merida English Library (MEL): Celebrating Serial Storytelling and Local Community
I was invited to speak as the “Author of the Month” for the Mérida English Library’s (MEL) lecture series, MEL Talks. In my presentation titled “Storytelling Across Media from Nationhood to Now,” I focused on the colorful figure of Don Catarino. As Mexico’s first national comic strip character and a revolutionary-era folk hero, the conversation sparked reflections on the enduring role of serialized media in shaping public life. I thoroughly enjoyed discussing my work with friends, neighbors and other authors in the community. It was the perfect way to conclude the first few months of my sabbatical year—which promises to be full of learning, sharing, and connection—based in vibrant Mérida, México.
